Squash has been played in India since the pre-war days. To a large extent it was introduced by the British forces that built squash courts in military cantonments and private clubs as an outlet for their sporting interests. In the early days squash had the following of a few who were either from the forces, members of private clubs or children returning from studies abroad. The ball boys were mostly Indian kids and when Britishers left the court these kids used to be the ones who picked up their kits and played to their heart's content. Eureka!! Is that how we got into squash and have become super human beings running and jumping at speeds which is very hard to achieve, and which can only be seen and then believed.
But then an organised activity for the promotion of the game was non-existent and the sport was very much unorganized. But with the formation of SRFI things started to develop and squash started getting famous as a sport. But then there was a long way to go and the progress was not so much appealing. Until Squash promotion, development and performance at all levels escalated in the last 10 years with players like Saurav Ghosal and Deepika making their impacts in the court and started representing India in the international fronts.
But did you know that Squash rackets is the newest of all racket sports. It is said that the game was invented at Harrow School in England by boys who kept knocking the ball on the wall awaiting their turn to play a game of tennis. Strange but true!!
